What is Widgetbox?
Widgetbox is both a directory of web widgets, and a system to help you manage your installed
widgets simply and quickly.
-
What's a web widget?
A web widget is a small piece of content (like a game or an ad) that can be placed on a blog or web page.
It's not a desktop widget, such as the ones provided by Apple and Yahoo.
-
Is Widgetbox secure?
Yes. Putting untrusted web widgets on your blog or web page is risky, because the Javascript in the
widget can read your web page and send that information back to the developer of the widget. It's the
one of the reasons that blog and social networking systems are increasingly restricting the use
of JavaScript (a key widget technology) in their systems. Widgetbox provides a security layer around
widgets that prevents them from using Javascript in that malicious manner.
-
How much does Widgetbox cost?
It's free for bloggers to get widgets and for developers to register widgets.
We'll always provide a free service even as we add more features that are likely to be for-pay.
-
What browsers do you support?
The list is here.
-
Does my blog's visitors have to have Javascript to use my widget?
Yes, though widgets disappear nicely if they don't. Here's more about it.
